The 48 kilometers of the historic, scenic and semi-destroyed Luperon Tourist Highway have forced Public Works brigades to intervene at 21 points where landslides, collapses and cracks have all but closed off access. As a result, experts are advising the Ministry of Public Works to re-route the highway completely. The state has spent over RD$250 million on repairs over the years. The reconstruction and improvement of the roadway will encourage national as well as international tourism, according to El Caribe.

Civil engineer and prominent seismologist Orlando Franco says that the government should map out a new route because of the region's seismic vulnerability. He noted that "the roadway is obsolete, it requires continuous maintenance and lacks adequate drainage...."

A couple of companies are currently working on repairs, repaving long stretches of the highway. The local Public Works deputy minister, Porfirio Brito, says that the complete reconstruction of the highway as was done with the road to Constanza would be the ideal solution.
