The struggle for the leadership of the opposition PRD party has stepped up the conflict between its president, Miguel Vargas Maldonado and former presidential candidate, Hipolito Mejia, as it seems that a fight is about to start to see who wields the most power in the party. This situation has led the Mejia group to ask for the head of Vargas Maldonado, because they believe that he was one of the people to blame for the PRD's defeat of in Sunday's elections. They criticized Vargas never took an active role in the campaign. According to Diario Libre, political scientist Freddy Angel Castro says that Mejia's speech on Tuesday, 22 May confirms that he has no plans to retire from political life or allow Miguel Vargas to have his own space within the party.
"This suggests a political conflict with Vargas Maldonado, since he is not giving him any space to recover, so we have to wait for the next few days or months for the face-to-face struggle between these two factions within the PRD," he stated. In his judgment, the party leadership organs should be convened in order to carry out a self-assessment and take the corrective steps needed. Another political scientist, Pedro Mateo, said he believes that everything points towards a greater internal split in the PRD, which if not dealt with could lead to the disintegration of the party. "If the PRD does not get rid of all its aging members, the PRD is going to self-destruct," he noted.
