First Lady and Vice President-elect Margarita Cedeno filled the Palacio de los Deportes with women on Sunday, to celebrate Mother's Day. Listin Diario reports there were scuffles and long lines as the women queued up to receive gifts and presents that were part of the event.
During the event, the complete refurnishing of 10 households was raffled. There were thousands of raffles of refrigerators, washing machines, music players, tableware, computers, pressure cookers, electric appliances, gas cylinders, stoves and beds. Women came from all around the Dominican Republic for the event.
Margarita Cedeno was welcomed at the event with chants of "Llego mama!" - Mom has come - developed to compete with the popular "Llego papa" slogan used in former President Hipolito Mejia's presidential campaign, before he lost to Danilo Medina, the ruling PLD party's candidate. Cedeno at the time had aspired to be the ruling PLD party presidential candidate, latter accepting the vice presidential nomination.
During the event, the First Lady danced with her son, Ramon Emil Florentino. As reported in Listin Diario, she said she was "privileged and happy to be able to be in the company of so many women in her dual role of First Lady and Vice President-elect. She expressed her appreciation for the Dominicans who voted for her. "Definitely, when as women we say we are headed one way, that is the way to go."
