Haitians are divided over the advantages or disadvantages of signing a free trade agreement with the DR. President-elect Danilo Medina is in favor of motivating Haiti to sign a free trade agreement. As reported in Haiti Libre online, Jean Robert Argand, a former president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Haiti said that this would only work "totally in favor of Dominican traders who would invade our market because we don't have the ability to compete." He said that Dominican products were already everywhere. But Eddy Labossiere, president of the Haitian Association of Economists believes the treaty would not create more inequality than there is at present. He said that Haiti's trade balance of exports with the DR is already in deficit of nearly US$800 million a year. He thinks that on the contrary, an agreement of this kind would provide Haitian products with an open door to market their products in the DR, although he does believe that some sectors should be protected and enhanced in the treaty.
