David Joel Toribio Guridis (aka Toribio Lugo or El Big Papi) and Catherine Matos Morales have been sent to preventive custody for a year. The couple is accused of the murder of Colombian Maribel Buritica, 34. While a Canadian, Gordon Wilson was initially suspected for having had a restraining order against him issued by the Police in Punta Cana, investigations have now led the Police to suspect that Toribio and his girlfriend are responsible. Eleven of Buritica's relatives who traveled from Colombia were present at the hearing. Toribio was sent to the Anamuyita jail, while Matos will await trial at the women's section of the old Higuey jail, as reported in Diario Libre.
Buritica's body was found on Sunday, 20 May after Toribio led the investigators to the site off the Autovia del Este. Toribio has been arrested on more than five occasions. He confessed to having kidnapped her and placing a tie-wrap around her neck. He said that he then went "on an errand" and when he returned he found her dead.
