Dominican 400m runner Luguelin Santos is becoming a more serious Olympic gold medal contender by the day. Over the weekend, in his most recent international meet at the FBK Games in Hengelo, the leading annual track and field event in the Netherlands, he won with a stunning time of 44.45 seconds.
Santos, 19, set his personal best, and a national record. Martyn Rooney, GBR, took second place with a time of 44.97. Nery Brenes of Costa Rica took third with 45.20.
Last week, at the Golden Spike competition in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in the 400m, Santos had set the second-best time of the season, with 44.45 seconds, trailing only US reigning World Champion LaShawn Merritt. Nery Brenes of Costa Rica, who defeated Santos for the gold in the Guadalajara 2011 Pan Am Games, was third.

Fifth: Marcell Deak-Nagy, Hungary, 46.74. Sixth: Josef Prokop, Czech Republic, 46.97. Seventh: Chris Clarke, Britain, 47.50. Eighth: Oscar Pistorius, South Africa, 47.66. These competitors are highly likely to run in the London Olympics.
Earlier this year, Luguelin had placed second also to Meritt LaShawn in the Samsung Diamond League competition held in Doha, Qatar.
His next important meet is at the Samsung Diamond League competition Saturday, 2 June in Eugene, Oregon. The events are preparatory competitions for the July 2012 London Olympics.
Unknown before 2010, Luguelin Santos first caught the sports world's attention when he was 16 years old by winning two gold medals in the Youth Track Olympics in 2010 (400 meters and the continental relay) held in Singapore.
The race that placed him in the world class was at the Youth Olympics in Singapore, 2010.
