A study carried out by civic group Participacion Ciudadana reveals that there is no fixed wage for a minister in the Dominican Republic, as reported in El Dia. For example, the base salary for the Minister of Tourism is RD$75,000 while the Minister of Foreign Relations' is RD$300,000. Other base salaries are Minister of Education: RD$300,000, Minister of the Presidency 250,000, Minister of Public Administration RD$200,000, Minister of Public Health RD$186,265, Minister of Sports RD$122,601, and the Minister of Industry and Commerce RD$118,680.

The President of the Republic's base salary is RD$90,000.

The same study found that there are 14 different base salaries for the directors in 15 government departments. The lowest is the wage of the director of Ground Transport at RD$60,000. The director of the Department of Taxes receives RD$500,000 a month in base salary.

According to the study, the Superintendent of Banks has a base salary of RD$899,000 but perks increase the wage to an estimated RD$1,588,320 when wage and indirect perks are added in. El Dia points out that is more than the President of the United States, whose salary is the equivalent to RD$1,335,760 a month.

The Superintendent of Health and Labor Risks makes a base salary of RD$333,500. The director of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute makes a base wage of RD$515,506 a month.

Carlos Pimentel, who heads the Transparency Department at Participacion Ciudadana, called for the urgent approval of the General law of Salaries to regulate wages in the public sector and prevent the discretional assignation of salaries, as quoted in El Dia.

A Ruling on Government Officials Performance Evaluation and Promotion states that the same remuneration should be paid for same work, same professional level.
