Yesterday, Monday 28 May, the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) formalized two contracts for the purchase and sale of energy from two private companies that will generate 100 megawatts of wind-powered electricity within 18 months. The investment in the two parks, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), totals US$195.7 million, or RD$7 billion, which according to CDEEE executive vice-president Celso Marranzini, shows the confidence of private investors in the future of the Dominican electricity industry. The agreements were signed by Marranzini and Aquiles Mateo Flaquer, the representative of Caribbean Wind Parks (PECASA) and Wilfredo Gonzalez for the Dominican Wind Group. These electricity generation projects were first drawn up in 2001 and 2004.

The PECASA company, which is investing US$126.8 million, will have the Guanillo Wind Park in Villa Vasquez, Montecristi ready in a little over a year and a half. This park will have a potential production of 50 megawatts, while the Dominican Wind Group will install the Matafongo Wind Farm in Matanzas in Peravia province within the same period and with an investment of US$68.9 million. The potential production from the Matanzas wind farm is also 50 megawatts. The projects are said to have a 20-year lifespan.

Marranzini said that 10% of the energy sources in the country will be wind and solar.

Seven hundred kilowatts have already been installed in wind farms, including Los Cocos wind farm in Pedernales province in the southwest is producing at full capacity.
