All today's newspapers report on the scene in Bella Vista Mall in Santo Domingo where one man killed another alledgedly over a debt of over a million pesos yesterday, Monday 28 May. The victim was Edwin Mateo, 38, and a man reported to be his close friend, Luis Rafael Diaz Mora, 39, apparently shot him. The two men had met in the Bella Vista Mall Food Court to discuss business and the fact that Mateo owed a very large sum to Diaz Mora. The shooter told police that the victim had attacked him and that he shot him in self-defense. Some eyewitness versions of events said that Diaz Mora shot his business partner at least six times. As reported, the two were in the clothing business in San Cristobal and the fight was over a debt pending for a property. Diaz Mora is under arrest and investigation at the Police headquarters.
Both men were in the clothing retain business. The victim owned the GQ Sport shop in San Cristobal.
Hoy reported that the murder occurred at the plaza at 5pm. Afterwards, all the food businesses in the food court closed.
Witnesses said that Mateo was talking on his phone when Diaz Mora arrived and after a few words shot at him and then started running, gun in hand, down Sarasota Avenue.
Hoy reported that Diaz Mora was arrested by Police officer Brezhnev Jimenez who was working at one of the banks at the plaza. Mateo left the mall but Jimenez pursued and arrested him on Avenida Sarasota at the corner of Higuemota Street. Jimenez said the murderer confessed.
On Tuesday, Listin Diario reported that Diaz Mora was a fugitive of justice in Barcelona, where he had been sentenced to five years prison for attempted murder against another Dominican who survived. The source said Diaz Mora left Spain six or seven months before he was sentenced. The person injured in Spain was also a native of Sainagua, a community in San Cristobal province. The source said that Diaz Mora had also been deported from the US, where he had problems with justice. The same source related Diaz Mora to illicit business.
