Over the last few days, basic mass-consumption products such as sugar, beans, eggs, chicken, garlic and onions have gone up in price, Diario Libre reports.
In markets in the capital, the price of a pound of sugar has increased from RD$17 to RD$18, a pound of beans has risen from RD$34 and RD$36 to between RD$36 and RD$38, eggs in the colmados were up to RD$4 from RD$5 each and chicken was now selling at between RD$50 and RD$55 a pound, up from between RD$45 and RD$55.
National Food Retailers Federation (Fenacodep) president Manolo Troncoso said that there was no reason for most of these increases, which took place after the elections, but that there was a shortage of beans so some retailers had increased the prices.
Vegetables have also increased in price with yuca (cassava) going from RD$10 to RD$12, and auyama (West Indian pumpkin) from RD$14 to RD$18 a pound. Bananas which cost RD$2 each before the election are now at RD$3, and the prices of salad vegetables like cabbage, lettuce and tomatoes have all risen over the last few days.
