Former presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia is opposed to expulsions of PRD members who are accused of conspiring against the organization and contributing to the triumph of Danilo Medina in the 20 May elections, according to a report in Listin Diario.

At a meeting of the heads of the municipal districts, he said that he deplored the expulsion of some comrades in San Francisco de Macoris, saying that it was better to be patient and not fight.

He trusted that Andres Bautista, PRD Operations Manager and Orlando Jorge Mera, Secretary General, together with other staff members would manage the party courteously whilst ensuring respect for the decision of the majority, because he believed that the people who had meddled should pay for their actions.

Mejia went on to say that he knew of the government plans in advance but he didn't believe that they would commit so many abuses, such as the use of the military. He also said that he had heard that his life was in danger but he was not killed as he had 58% of voter preference. According to him, abstention rates in the capital reached 52% due to repression, blackmail and buying of cedulas, and he said that he would send a report to the Organization of American States (OAS) complaining about what he described as "the atrocities that had been carried out."

At the meeting, attended by the heads of 63 out of 80 municipal districts, Mejia was told about cases of government abuses as well as the interference of the Armed Forces during the electoral process

The meeting with Mejia, which took place in his offices, was attended by Andres Julio Ricardo, the president of the Dominican Association of Municipal Districts; Pedro Richardson, executive director; Victor de Aza, executive director of the Dominican Federation of Municipalities, Fausto Ruiz, and others,

Meanwhile, PRD members Alejandro Abreu, Eduardo Jorge Prats and Nelson Marte, who support Miguel Vargas, called on PRD members to preserve party unity and rejected calls to expel Vargas, saying that the vast majority of the members would defend the institution of the party as much as necessary.
