Today, Friday 1 June marks the start of the Hurricane Season in the Caribbean, ending on 30 November. The good news is that this season is forecast to be quieter than last year with between nine and 15 tropical storms, of which between four and eight are expected to become hurricanes. Regardless, anyone living in the Caribbean needs to be constantly prepared for a strong tropical storm. This means that June-July is the time of the year to complete preparations, including maintenance of storm shutters, windows, and doors or relocation plans in case of a big storm. 2012 has been a year of heavy rains in the months leading up to the hurricane season, which usually marks a month of more frequent rains.
The names for the 2012 hurricanes are: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie and William.
Odds of getting caught in a hurricane are slim, as they are not as frequent as all the hype would make it appear.
