Explosion in sugar mill takes out generator

An explosion in one of the molasses tanks at the Barahona Sugar Mill yesterday, Monday 4 May spilled tons of the byproduct into the channel where the Ege-Haina 47-megawatt generator takes its cooling water, forcing the electricity generator to be shut down. Some newspapers carried pictures of men, women and children scooping up the molasses from the channel and scraping off the dirt. The explosion cost the Consorcio Azucarero Central millions of pesos worth of losses. There were rolling blackouts as a result of the loss of the Barahona generator.
