An average of 20% of the annual births at the San Lorenzo Maternity Hospital in Los Mina in Santo Domingo are children of Haitians, most of whom arrive at the health center in labor. Some of the 12,825 births registered in 2011, 2,019 were to foreigners, some living in other parts of the country and others coming directly from Haiti. According to hospital director Dr. Paulino Diaz Ozoria, there were 317 births to young Haitian women under the age of 19. Of these, 234 were natural births and the rest were C-sections.

He also told Diario Libre reporters that there was one maternal death of a total of seven at the maternity hospital. The proportion of births for this year is following a similar pattern. Diaz Ozoria said that most of these mothers had not received any pre-natal care, which poses a risk to their own health as well as to their babies. During a tour of the waiting rooms for maternity consultations, reporters noted a significant number of Haitians seeking treatment and pre-natal care.

Births of Haitian children have been increasing since 2009, when the hospital registered nearly 1,600 cases. In 2010, the number was 1,928. The hospital authorities said that the increase came after the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. Between Dominicans and foreigners in 2010, there were 13,190 babies, and there were seven deaths of Haitians among the 23 maternal deaths registered. Most of the foreigners arrive at the hospital in labor, in advanced stages of the pregnancy, with anemia, high blood pressure, untreated and severe endocrinological problems, which sometimes have fatal consequences. In general terms, the maternity provides assistance to around 35,000 women.
