Judges, lawyers, prosecutors, victims and the accused are concerned for their lives because of repeated incidents of physical aggression at the Federico Alvarez Palace of Justice in the city of Santiago. These incidents are the result of a lack of a police presence at the courts in the judicial district. The most recent case occurred last Thursday when prosecutor Otto Soriano was wounded in the forehead by a former police captain, William Francisco Gomez, at the court of the Justice of Peace in the First District. The former officer assaulted the prosecutor after the court ordered him to pay RD$3500 per month in child support for his three children.

After the attack on the prosecutor, who was incapacitated for 21 days after receiving eight stitches on his forehead, the aggressor was arrested and charged. The deputy prosecutors in the Santiago judicial district lack protection once they finish their work, as do the members of the Public Defenders.

The general coordinator of the Movement for Dignity and Transparency in the Exercise of the Law, Felito Toribio Ramirez, told Diario Libre that the lack of security in the Palace of Justice is threatening the physical safety of the people who go there. One judge told reporters that most of his fellow judges barely have a police presence during the court hearings.
