Yesterday, Tuesday 5 June, the President of South Korea, Lee Myung-Bak and President Leonel Fernandez exchanged messages celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his message, the President of South Korea said that he appreciated the measures the two countries had taken to develop friendship in several areas ranging from politics and economics to culture. He also observed that relations had grown and deepened since Leonel Fernandez had visited South Korea in 2006 and said that he hoped that the relationship of cooperation, formalized on 6 June 1962, would continue between the two countries.

In turn, the Dominican President's message highlighted the economic achievements by South Korea in recent times, transforming it from a poor country devastated by war in the 1950s to the fourth largest economy in Asia. He said that the experience of South Korea motivated countries like the Dominican Republic to work actively with the international community and was an incentive for development.

In 2011, the Dominican Republic imported US$152.8 million worth of products from South Korea, mostly cars and electronics, and exported US$96.1 million in different items including recyclable paper and cardboard and scrap metal, as reported in Listin Diario.
