In a ceremony yesterday, Tuesday 5 June at the Hotel V Centenario in Santo Domingo, attended by the members of the diplomatic corps, consuls, legislators, government officials and representatives of the Catholic Church, Danilo Medina, Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez and the seven overseas deputies received the certificates confirming the presidential and legislative election result. As President-elect, in a 10-minute speech, Medina thanked God and all who have given him "the opportunity of being able to direct the destiny of a nation". He also thanked his wife Candy and President Leonel Fernandez who he called "a great man and party leader".
He thanked all who had looked upon him with kindness and told his critics that they had helped him as well as Margarita to grow and become better in order to convince them. He said that the election victory of 20 May did not belong to him and Margarita but to all the Dominican people, and the pledges he made in the campaign were for all the men and women in the country.
He asked God to guide him in making the right decisions for the benefit of Dominicans and to succeed with flying colors in whatever situation that might arise.
He said he had decided to serve his country whatever the circumstances, so he was neither afraid of difficult times nor scared of being faced with difficult decisions. He said he was ready to govern the Dominican Republic in good times and bad.
