According to data issued by Public Health, of the 118,730 births recorded during 2011 in the country, 68,960 or 58% were to mothers under the age of 18. The data also showed that 18,263 of women giving birth were Haitian, and that there had been 1,847 stillbirths and 24,167 miscarriages.
Diario Libre reports that C-sections made up 40.4% of the total and according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization the countries with the lowest perinatal mortality rate have less than 10% of caesarean births, and they say no country can justify a higher rate than 10-15%.
