The rising waters of Enriquillo Lake in the southwest could soon leave the town of Duverge practically cut off. Journalist Carlos Julio Feliz said that the rising waters have already reached the side of the highway that links the town with Las Baitoas, in the Province of Independencia. He warned that the rising waters have already engulfed farmland, but feels that urgent action is needed because the main road will soon be covered. He said that any rainstorm makes the road impassable.
Feliz said that this is the main road used by people traveling to Jimani for crossing to Haiti. He said that if the lake floods the road, people who live in Las Baitoas, only ten minutes from Duverge, would have to drive all the way round the lake, which takes three hours. "I see no other alternative than cutting through the mountain, and this cannot be postponed," he urged.
