In an interview with Listin Diario, the director general of BanReservas bank, Claudio Peguero said that there had been 618 complaints of electronic fraud or phishing, resulting in losses of approximately RD$55.6 million over the last four years and the first four months of 2012 in the Dominican Republic.

In 2008 alone there were 116 complaints of fraud with a loss of RD$7.7 million, in 2009 166 complaints and a loss of RD$7.8 million; 2010, 186 complaints and a loss of RD$8.4 million. In 2011 the figure dropped to 131 complaints but the losses increased to RD$29.6 million. He said that in the first third of this year there have been only 16 complaints and a loss of RD$1.8 million.

Peguero said that generally most of the money was recovered, but there was always some type of loss, depending on the case.

In addition many people did not make a complaint despite realizing they had been subject to a phishing attack after providing personal data.

He said that people should report these incidents as this would result in better protection.

Peguero confirmed that it would be a good idea for the Banking Association to run an advertising campaign to inform the public to prevent people from becoming victims of phishing

He said that those responsible were prosecuted where possible, but many of the groups were from overseas, mainly in Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico and others from inside prisons here.

His advice was to inform people that no bank would ask their customers for personal details and that people should not respond to messages or emails, and should stop and think before providing personal information. Neither should they open suspicious messages. Victims of fraud should go to their bank or the National Police.
