President-elect Danilo Medina announced yesterday, Monday 11 June that together with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) he proposes to develop and implement an ambitious plan aimed at improving the quality of the school breakfast and the nutrition levels of the students who attend public schools and the residents of the rural areas of the country.
Medina held a meeting with WFP executive director Ertharin Cousin at his political office on Sarasota Avenue, where they discussed the idea of drawing up an agreement with the ministries of Education, and Public Health, to overcome the nutritional difficulties that affect the school population and a high percentage of Dominicans who live in the countryside.
"The problem is that the Dominican Republic is among the countries defined as middle-income, and that it is not listed among the countries eligible to receive international aid for this purpose," said Medina.
