The Dominican Republic has become a well-known exporter of queens, queen bees, that is. Because of their docility and easy handling characteristics, the local Apis Mellifera produced in the country has become a major export. Last month 37 queen bees and their handlers took part in the IX Central American and Caribbean Beekeeping Congress in Costa Rica.

El Nuevo Diario says that this new commercial exchange is an opportunity for Dominican beekeepers because it opens the way into the international market beyond honey and wax, according to Santiago Rivas, the head of the Dominican Beekeepers Network.

Costa Rican beekeepers prefer the bees produced in the DR because of their ability to be handled, in marked contrast to the Africanized bees in Costa Rica.
