President Leonel Fernandez has handed out awards to several leading companies with over 50 years of service to the "economic and social development of the nation." The companies being honored yesterday, Wednesday 13 June included El Caribe newspaper, La Aurora, Brugal, Bermudez, Cortes Hermanos, Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana, Cesar Iglesias, La Tabacalera and Listin Diario.
Speaking to an audience that included the country's leading government and business figures, Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD) president Ligia Bonetti de Valiente said that the industrial sector was going through a phase of redirecting its efforts in a competitive market. She stressed that the sector is seeking to re-launch and rebuild a sustainable industrial base that is also competitive on the international scene. She called for the elimination of barriers such as unnecessary protection and tariffs.
