In the southwestern province of Independencia, the apparently unstoppable expansion of Lake Enriquillo is now threatening to engulf the section of the International Highway that goes through the community of Las Baitoas in the municipality of Duverge. Observers of the phenomenon say that only two of the three islands that were in the lake are now visible and local residents are afraid that they will wake up one day with the water inside their houses.
With the highway under threat, the local authorities are suggesting it should be rerouted some 500 meters away from the waters of the lake, which is over 125 feet below sea level. The expansion of the area covered by the lake has also reduced farm production in the area, forcing many people to purchase food that they would previously have cultivated for their own consumption. Several theories have been put forward to explain the increase in water levels. One suggestion in El Nuevo Diario is that the recent earthquakes may have caused seawater to flow into the lake.
