In many areas today, 14 June, will just be another day. But exactly 53 years ago a group of young men staged one of the most daring invasions ever carried out against a dictatorship. The invasion of Estero Hondo, Maimon and Constanza was a three-pronged attack on the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and his 30-year regime. In the Metro station at the Centro de los Heroes in Santo Domingo, there is a museum honoring these men who nearly all gave up their lives in the attempt to overthrow the government. This reckless attack on the "establishment" was perhaps the beginning of the end for the rule of Trujillo.
