The director general of Equality Policies at the Ministry or Women, Maria Ramos, says that the increase in violence against women requires greater financial support as statistics show that 200 women are being murdered each year. She also told El Nuevo Diario that the government's financial support has to be combined with new public policies on gender issues. She mentioned a 2001 Presidential Decree that requires all the ministries to have a department to deal with gender issues but this has not been implemented. Ms. Ramos mentioned that as well as the murders themselves, the huge consequences of these crimes also had to be taken into account, especially the children who are left behind. Ramos emphasized the fact that the Ministry of Women is working towards the eradication of violence against women.
