A young man was shot dead and a woman was injured yesterday, Wednesday 13 June, in a shooting incident between demonstrators and police during the indefinite strike that is affecting the city of Salcedo. The strike was called by the Broad Front for Popular Struggle (FALPO). The fatality was identified as Jonathan Paulino, 31, while the woman shot in the leg was identified as Johana Rodriguez, 31. She was shot as she was taking food to her husband who was working in the barrio.

The latest strike was called in demand of clearing up the death of a young athlete, Hector Ramon Medina near the city's Central Park on 12 May. He was shot by several people who fled on a motorcycle. While the National Police say that FALPO members were responsible, the campaigning organization blames the law enforcement agency for the killing. The FALPO spokesman in Salcedo, Dario Camilo, warned that the strike is indefinite. Demonstrators blocked several streets in the city with burning tires, rocks and other debris. Military troops and police carrying heavy weapons patrolled the streets. From the early hours of the morning the atmosphere in the city is tense, due to the demonstrations and clashes. This has forced many families to leave their homes and take refuge in the houses of relatives in the countryside.
