Today, 15 June, the judges at the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) will hear the case on the charges brought by Miguel Vargas Maldonado regarding his suspension as president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and the expulsion of other activists.
The magistrates Mariano Rodriguez, Manuel Hernandez Peguero, Mabel Feliz, Marino Mendoza and John Guiliani will begin hearing the case at 9am.
The secretary general of the TSE notified the PRD so that they might attend. Vargas is represented by lawyers Eduardo Jorge Prats, Jose Miguel Vasquez and Miriam Paulino, while the group of former President Hipolito Mejia is represented by Cristobal Rodriguez, Eric Raful and Julio Cury. Mejia was the presidential candidate for the PRD in the 20 May presidential election, losing by four percentage points to Danilo Medina of the PLD. Vargas Maldonado, despite being the party's president, was not known to actively participate in the political campaign.
Security is being increased around the TSE to avoid incidents such as those from last Friday when three people were injured during a fight between the two groups of supporters.
The newly declared president of the PRD, Andres Bautista of the Hipolito Mejia group, said yesterday that they hope that the TSE does what it should do and follows the law and the Constitution.
