View Full Version : Dominican basketball team to Centrobasket

Team Dominican Republic will be one of 10 countries taking part in the 2012 Centrobasket Tournament for Men in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 18-24 June. The Centrobasket tournament is organized by FIBA through FIBA Americas with participating national teams of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

The tournament will help prepare the Dominican team for the Caracas, Venezuela Olympics last chance qualifier 2-8 July.

The DR plays in Group B against Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico and the US Virgin Islands. Group A includes Bahamas, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama and host Puerto Rico.

On the Dominican roster are Eloy Vargas, Ronald Ramon, Amaurys Fermin, Juan Coronado, Eulis Baez, Jack Michael Martinez, Josh Asselin, Gerardo Suero, Karl Towns, Manuel Guzman, Manuel Fortuna and NBA players Al Horford and Francisco Garcia. The team will play an exhibition game against Puerto Rico in Bayamon tomorrow, prior to the tournament getting its start on Monday, 18 June.

The Puerto Ricans are in first place having won the tournament on 10 previous occasions, followed by Cuba, which has won on four occasions.

The latest edition of the Championship was held in Santo Domingo in 2010, in which Puerto Rico defeated Dominican Republic 89-80 in the final match.

The top 4 of Centrobasket qualify for the Pre-World Basketball 2013. The Pre-World 2013 is a qualifier for the 2014 World Cup that is set to take place in Spain.

The draws of the tournament are the many NBA players that are on Centrobasket team rosters.

The Dominican Republic is ranked No. 25 led by Atlanta Hawks All-Star Al Horford and Francisco Garcia of the Sacramento Kings.

Puerto Rico is No.16 worldwide on the FIBA rankings and includes NBA talents JJ Barea of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Carlos Arroyo, Peter John Ramos, Renaldo Balkman and Daniel Santiago.

Jamaica is unranked but boasts Samardo Samuels of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Robert Reid of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jerome Jordan of the New York Knicks and Patrick Ewing Jr.
