With the opening of two new Model Penitentiaries in La Romana and La Vega, the system will soon cover 40% of the Dominican prison population, as reported in Diario Libre. "These two centers will have the capacity to house, comfortably, some 1,200 inmates each," said the Attorney General of the Republic, Radhames Jimenez Pena. Speaking yesterday, Monday 18 June, Jimenez pointed out that more work was still needed in this area. The Justice Department representative highlighted the numbers during yesterday's inauguration of the central offices of the Deputy National Coordinator of Half-way Houses, under the Coordinating Unit of the New Model of Prison Management.

The purpose is to contribute to the reintegration into society of the graduates of the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centers, as well as the management of the alternative measures in the sentences. The new offices will be based in a house that was seized in a drug trafficking case - which was not specified - in the Los Rios sector of Santo Domingo. During the inauguration ceremony, the coordinator of the New Model of Penitentiary Management, Roberto Santana Sanchez, said that the half-way establishment would be in charge of supervising and evaluating the execution of the plans in the cases of pre-release, conditional release and the management of the alternative measures of punishment.
