Gas leak causes panic in Santiago

A propane leak at a gas bottling facility on the Joaquin Balaguer Highway to Navarrete yesterday, Monday 18 June, caused panic in the area and forced the authorities to evacuate dozens of residents from the surrounding area. This is the second leak in as many weeks: a similar incident took place in a propane facility in El Ingenio in the Cienfuegos area last week. Civil Defense brigades and units from the Red Cross responded to the emergency. The evacuations and the crowds of onlookers cause a major tie-up on the highway to and from Navarrete. According to El Caribe, many businesses were forced to close and the residents of Los Tocones were warned of the danger.
