During a recent visit to the Dominican Republic, Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, warned that if overfishing continues, there would be no more fish by 2030-2040, as reported in Hoy.
Cousteau was in the country for a talk on "Preservation of the Flora and Fauna in the Caribbean" sponsored by the Fundacion Tropigas Natural.
He called for the creation of protected areas for the preservation of fish populations and praised the achievements of the La Caleta Submarine Park near the Las Americas International Airport that contributes to both tourism and the local economy.
"Politicians manage resources and territory, but they have never known what happens under the water in the oceans. It would be interesting to take them diving so they can become aware of what is happening in the oceans," stated Cousteau.
He called for greater awareness, especially among the younger generation, of the importance of the oceans. "We need the backing of society, of businesspeople and politicians who give the least support."
