The Migration Department has signed an agreement with the Dominican Builders and Housing Association (Acoprovi) and the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) to examine options for establishing procedures for implementing the process of regularizing the status of foreign workers.

The agreement will pursue the introduction of article 135 of the Labor Code while promoting the idea that companies should cover the cost of regularizing the immigration status of their foreign workers, as reported in El Dia.

After signing the agreement, Migration Director Jose Ricardo Taveras called on the Haitian authorities to provide passports to casual workers living in the Dominican Republic without documents.

He said that there were large numbers of foreigners in the informal labor market, with Haitians making up over 50% of the total, and as this was a more than 50-year old problem, it would not be solved overnight.

Acoprovi and JAD handed over papers from 201 businesses that were seeking to regularize their foreign workers.

The agreement was signed at the Department of Migration by Taveras, the president of JAD, Cesar Paniagua Guerrero and Fermin Acosta Javier, the president of Acoprovi.

The event was witnessed by Cy Winter, representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
