The president of the Central Sugar Consortium, Virgilio Perez Bernal, has announced that the sugar refinery in Barahona reached a new record for 2011-2012 with a production level of 72,010 tons of sugar.

He said that during the harvest, the refinery paid monthly wages of RD$29 million to its workers in the provinces of Barahona, Bahoruco and Independencia and was the largest employer in the region.

He also said that he was pleased that a new accommodation complex had opened last November, providing housing for 280 cane cutters. It has 24-hour running water, electricity and medical service, plus permanent security and recreational areas amongst other facilities aimed at improving the living conditions of cane cutters.

Perez Bernal said that every year the company would continue to make the necessary investments in the fields, transport and the factory to continue to increase production. He thanked all of the workers and employees for their enthusiasm and their efforts.
