The Dominican Language Academy said yesterday, Tuesday 19 June, that it was opposed to the use of double gender terms which were being promoted by feminist groups.

Bruno Rosario Candelier, the head of the academy issued a book yesterday called "Linguistic Sexism and Double Gender" which says that it is affecting good use of the language.

He said that it was unnecessary to say citizens or Dominicans twice, using the male and female versions of the word, dominicanas y dominicanos, and that it was linguistically redundant in most cases.

He said that language has a basic law that is to employ the least number of words to express the highest quantity of ideas. He also argued that Dominicans do not use the double gender when speaking in private.
