Yesterday morning, Tuesday 19 June, three agents arrested the controversial mayor of Cabarete, Gabriel Mora (Canoa), on a charge of attempted murder of a businessman. Canoa was arrested and taken to the Palace of Justice where remand terms were to be agreed.

He was released a short while later, after the agents received a phone call from an officer identified in El Caribe newspaper as Ogando.

But in the evening, Mora turned himself in to the authorities.

Business organizations have repeatedly complained that Mora regularly breaks the law, but the latter has been able to finagle his way out, reportedly using political influence, to avoid facing legal consequences until now.

The arrest warrant was issued by magistrate Rafael Osiris Reyes Vega, from the court in Puerto Plata.

Canoa is accused of firing three shots at businessman Ambiorix Vargas when he was in his car in Cabarete on 15 March.

Another case against Mora was heard in May, for violation of Law 200-04 on Free Access to Public Information.
