The Dominican men's team, which is still trying to qualify for the London Olympics, got off to a good start by defeating Mexico 85-67 at the Centrobasket regional tournament being held in Puerto Rico. Dominicans started slow in the game, with Mexico leading the first ten minutes 23-16. The Dominicans ended the second quarter 42-40, to take control of the game from then on. At one point in the fourth quarter the Dominicans had a 20-point lead over the Mexicans.
FIBA reports that four players led the Dominican offense. NBA player Al Horford led the winners with 24 points and eight rebounds, Jack Michael Martinez scored 18 with 13 rebounds, Eulis Baez added 16 with 10 rebounds and Juan Coronado 12.
While the tournament has no bearing on the Dominicans' quest to make the Olympics, it is serving as an important tune-up before the all-important 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Venezuela at the beginning of July.
The tournament continues with the DR team meeting Jamaica on Wednesday, 20 June at 6pm. Jamaica has won its first two games against the US Virgin Islands and Costa Rica.
