School directors are asking the Ministry of Education to find a solution to the problem of thousands of students who have not been able to get into universities because they have yet to pass all or parts of the National Tests. The educators regret that these students, as such a productive age, according to Listin Diario, have been left behind because of their inability to pass the tests on more than one occasion. The school authorities say that they can no longer do anything for the students, since they have been promoted, because they had an average of over 70. Ancell Schecker from the Ministry of Education said that there are 15,000 students all over the country, which is not a very high failure rate even after two or three chances. The promotion rate for the eighth grade is 95% and for high school it is 85%.
In November of 2010 the ministry called for students with pending examinations from 2007 to 2009 to come to a special examination. Last December the ministry invited 2,012 students with exams pending from 1994 to 2006, but only 1,664 showed up to take the exams and 1,525 of them passed. There are still students from as far back as 1992 when the National Tests were begun who have yet to pass all of the requirements.
