The Santiago Strategic Development Council has assessed the approval of the contract and financing of the water treatment facilities that form part of the overall program for improving the city. Council president Carlos Fondeur said that Santiago appreciated the efforts of Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez and Senator Julio Cesar Valentin to get the US$216 million financing approved. The project involves the construction of water treatment plants in the Los Salados area in the south of the city, and the expansion of the current treatment plant in the Embrujo area. According to El Caribe, these water treatment facilities will reduce bacteria and other undesirable elements that the city sends into the Yaque River. The program will increase the ability of the Water and Sewer Corporation of Santiago (Coraasan) to treat up to 80% of the residual water produced in the city.
