The Chief of Police, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, ordered the transfer of part of the Police detachment in Salcedo yesterday, Wednesday 21 June, including the commanding officer, Colonel Eduard Almanzar Tejada, who now becomes deputy director of Criminal Investigations in Puerto Plata. He was replaced by Colonel Juan Antonio Lora Castro, from Puerto Plata. The transfer comes after last week's unrest in Salcedo in which four people were killed.

In response to these events, the Popular Front for the Struggle (FALPO) has declared a seven-day timeframe starting today for the authorities to clear up the death of the sports leader, Hector Ramon Medina, who was killed on 12 May and whose death led to the strike which left four people dead and 22 wounded. The FALPO group also announced that it would file a lawsuit against the Dominican Republic with the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and with Amnesty International. "We are not going to stand idly by, nobody is going to halt our struggle and Salcedo will continue to demonstrate," said Falpo spokesman Victor Breton. During the protests in Salcedo, Jonathan Paulino, Dilenia Quezada, Ricardo Guzman and Antonio Cacerez were killed. A further 22 people were wounded by gunfire during the disturbances.
