Eleven violent deaths were registered in Santiago, Puerto Plata and La Vega over the last week, bringing the total to 97 so far this year. The wave of violence included the murder of 68-year old Antonio de Jesus Rodriguez, a pastor in el Cerro, Rincon de Piedra, in San Jose de las Matas. Three Haitians are being sought in connection with the crime, according to El Caribe. The newspaper says that the crime has unleashed a wave of anti-Haitian sentiment. Rodriguez's widow Leonilda del Carmen Taveras Espinal, 63, told reporters that the Haitians took eleven thousand pesos after shooting her husband.

Other incidents included the death of a criminal who was pursued by the police for several robberies in La Vega and the death in Guayabal, Santiago of an alleged assailant who has yet to be identified. A man known as "El Mocho" was found stabbed to death in Puerto Plata, and yet another unidentified man was found shot to death in Gurabo, Santiago. Again in Puerto Plata, a security guard at the Claro offices near the Cable Car was shot and killed and the thieves made off with his shotgun. The level of violence is causing serious concern with El Caribe reporting more than 500 violent deaths between April and June.
