The Dominican Republic men's basketball team defeated Jamaica yesterday 80-64, advancing in the Centrobasket tournament now taking place in Puerto Rico. As occurred in their first win against Mexico, the DR team had a slow start but as the game advanced it was clear that the Dominican Republic was the stronger of the two teams. In the game, Atlanta Hawks' Al Horford netted 23 points - 10 rebound double-double. Manuel Fortuna Lara and Juan Coronado were the Dominican Republic's second-highest scorers with 19 points each. Earlier the DR had defeated Mexico, for the two wins in Group B. Jamaica now has two wins (against Costa Rica and US Virgin Islands) and one loss to the DR.
Action continues today with four games: Nicaragua-Panama (1pm), Mexico-Jamaica (3:30pm), DR-Costa Rica (6pm) and Puerto Rico-Cuba (8:30pm). Bahamas and US Virgin Islands get a day off.
Puerto Rico yesterday ensured it will play in the semifinals, by defeating Nicaragua for its third win (107-67). By making the semifinals, Puerto Rico also ensured a berth in the Pre World Basketball Cup of the Americas in 2013.
The DR-Costa Rica game of 21 June will be transmitted in the Dominican Republic by Channel 21 at 6pm (live) and then again by Antena Latina (Channel 7) at 12 midnight. The Friday, 22 June game matching the DR and US Virgin Islands will be televised by Channel 21 at 8:30pm and then again by Antena Latina at midnight.
