Following a suggestion by the director of the Department of Migration, Jose Ricardo Taveras that the Dominican Republic should withdraw from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the Minister of the Presidency, Cesar Pina Toribio, representing the Government, issued a statement yesterday, Thursday 21 June, as reported in El Nuevo Diario.

The court has been critical of the country's attitude towards Haitians, but Toribio denied that there was any animosity towards the court or Haitian residents in the country, or towards any foreign citizen. He stressed that the government had demonstrated more than enough solidarity with the Haitian people.

The communication said that cooperation with the Haitian people and authorities would take place in accordance with Dominican laws and that all efforts to create the best possible climate of coexistence and relationship with Haiti and Haitians would continue.

He stated that although he recognized that some aspects would lead to complaints and others differences of interpretation, in a general sense the Dominican government would deal with these situations in accordance with the law and without prejudicing Dominican authority nor sovereignty, whilst at the same time in a spirit of collaboration with the Haitian people.

He said that if there was one country that has cooperated with Haitians in all ways, it is the Dominican Republic.
