There is a developing movement in Las Terrenas that opposes the rebuilding of Pueblo de los Pescadores. The stretch of about 16 wooden houses within the 60-meter fringe along Las Terrenas beach burned down on Sunday 6 May due to an electric fire. The houses were built from the original wooden fishermen's shacks. Bars and restaurants were located inside wooden structures, making this a gastronomic and nighttime attraction in Samana.

But some opposition is emerging against the reconstruction. Environmentalists say the stretch should be left as beachfront.

The Ministry of Tourism initially announced that funds from CEIZTUR would be used for the reconstruction, but now some appear to be having second thoughts.

The bars and restaurants had leased the rights to the locations from original illegal occupants, and thus no one has the land title rights to the property.

Tourism Deputy Minister Elsa de Leon opposes their reconstruction. She argues that other businesses along the seafront are not building in concrete to resist fires.

Reportedly, the Ministry of Environment also opposes the reconstruction of the bars and restaurant village at the site, and would be recommending their relocation on the grounds that the businesses violate environmental laws. At present, the site has been cleared but construction has not yet been begun.

Blogger Jose Bourget suggests the village be located elsewhere. In his 20 June entry he writes:

"We can build something similar and even better, but elsewhere. In a previous article I suggested the area further ahead towards Playa Las Ballenas as a possible location and, in a recent contribution, architect Marcelo Albuquerque has suggested the area around the current police station.

I'm sure there could be other viable proposals and the one suggested by architect Albuquerque may even add the entire section from the cemetery to the former Aldea de los Pescadores, and could even include the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Rio Las Terrenas, the design of an attractive cultural center that includes boutiques, artisan shops, art galleries, as well as plenty of gastronomic offers. Not everything has to be in the same place the way it was in the former Aldea and nothing prescribes that things have to be as they were, particularly if something better and more beneficial is possible."
