During a meeting of the Justice Commission with the drafters of the Dominican Penal Code, the president of the Commission, Demostenes Martinez stated that the changes to the Penal Code would strike a blow to criminals in the Dominican Republic.
The proposed modifications include an increase in maximum jail sentences from 30 to 40 years for certain crimes, which according to Martinez are a reflection of the times the Dominican Republic finds itself in today. Also accumulated jail sentences for up to 60 years, new technological crimes, criminalizing of incidents involving "Devil's Acid," and penalties for adults found to be responsible for using children to commit crimes.
Nevertheless, commenting in Diario Libre today, Friday 22 June, penal lawyer Artagnan Perez Mendez said that codes could not prevent crime. "The prevention of crime corresponds to other state entities, in whose hands is the remedy of the causes of the problem."
