According to the Haitian press yesterday, Thursday 21 June, as part of a series of measures aimed at putting an end to smuggling and to increasing monetary income within Haiti, the country's Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe has suggested putting an end to the markets that are held along the border with the Dominican Republic.

At present there are 14 markets along the length of the border, all on the Dominican side, where both countries exchange around US$100 million in goods each year.

He said that they should not be opening their border two out of every five working days and that his government wanted to have better control over the products entering Haitian territory, and at the moment, via the twice-weekly markets, Dominican products were coming in without paying Haitian taxes leading to an estimated loss for Haiti of between US$300 and 500 million.
