A report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) suggests that greater support for innovation in the private sector of the Dominican Republic would lead to an improvement in the country's economy.

The study carried out by the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Unit (STIP) was published yesterday, Thursday 21 June and identified the areas where existing products could be improved, the creation of others and the generation of employment and economic growth.

The report considered that the standard of research in universities was insufficient to ensure the economic benefits in the fields of science and technology, as the highest economic returns occurred when businesses adopted new products and processes.

There should also be an increase in cooperation and interaction between businesses that could concentrate their efforts and resources in sectors such as sustainable energy, health, agriculture and agribusinesses.

At the same time, UNCTAD, based in Geneva, recommended a greater investment in post graduate research, and highlighted the importance of scholarships and bringing back talented Dominicans from overseas who could lead the projects with the necessary advanced knowledge needed by the country.
