Yesterday, Thursday June 21, the British naval ship RFA Fort Rosalie, commanded by Captain Martin Gould arrived in the port of Santo Domingo where it will stay for five days. As it is too large for the port itself it will remain at anchor at least a mile from the coast and transport to and from the ship will be carried out by the Dominican navy.

It has been several years since a visit of this nature although there have always been naval vessels patrolling the area, but this time the decision for the visit was taken in the spirit of deepening the bilateral relations between the two countries, recognizing that the DR has the largest economy in the Caribbean and is the second largest nation in terms of population.

RFA Fort Rosalie is usually used to assist Caribbean nations in case of natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes or earthquakes and, in addition, to support the fight against drug dealing in the area.

During this visit, Captain Gould will meet the with the Director of Civil Defense, Paratrooper General Luis Luna Paulino as well as hosting various activities on board with Dominican authorities and representatives of other countries involved in the fight against drug dealing.

There will also be courtesy meetings with high-ranking Dominican navy officers, a luncheon for invited guests, a cocktail party on Saturday and an afternoon tea before the boat leaves on Monday.

In order to mark the opening of the Olympic Games in London on 27 July the Captain will also invite a delegation headed by the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, Luis Mejia.
