Due to a large quantity of counterfeit money circulating in Santiago and other parts of the Cibao, many businesses are now refusing to accept RD$2,000 bills, saying that they are scared of taking them and often are not making large sales as they do not want to take the risk.

They justify their decision on the basis that many of them have been victims after accepting the notes, which are very similar to real RD$2,000 bills and it is very often impossible to detect which are real and which are fake.

Counterfeit RD$1000, RD$500 and even RD$50 peso bills are also in circulation.

The spokesman for the Central Cibao National Police, Colonel Lorenzo Morillo, said that they were investigating the circulation of counterfeit money in the area and that several people had been arrested and charged with exchanging fake bills.

As well as Santiago the counterfeit money is in circulation in La Vega, Bonao, Puerto Plata, Mao, Moca and other parts of the Cibao.
