Engineer Hamlet Hermann writes today in Hoy that there can only be complicity of the authorities in the stealing of the cables of Dominican bridges. He makes the point the replacement of new cables is lucrative for those doing the procuring. "The incredible and ineffable case of the theft of the suspension cables of the important Juan Pablo Duarte Bridge over the Ozama River exposes, again, the selective indifference of those officers (ministers of Public Works) that only we Dominicans can understand since it is such a frequent occurrence," he writes. The Ministry of Public Works says that the bridge's cargo capacity has been halved due to the theft of the cables. But, he writes, the Ministry forgets that during the first government of Leonel Fernandez, when Jimmy Duran and Diandino Pena were ministers, the cables were also replaced. And when Freddy Perez and Miguel Vargas Maldonado were ministers of public works during the government of Hipolito Mejia, they also purchased new cables for the bridge.
"And each time millions of dollars were spent without anyone establishing the negligence or the complicity of those in charge at Public Works. And again we will have to buy new cables, just now when the "pigeons will be flying" and the government is in the last days of its control of the budget."
Hamlet Hermann asks: "How is it possible that most of the cables that sustain the capital city bridge can be stolen without any civil or military authorities having perceived that this crime has been happening not for months, but for years, in broad daylight? "Is this a case of negligence or complicity?"
